Countertops Measuring Tips

kitchen estimates

Once you have decided to fabricate and install your stone project, the next step would be the actual measuring of your countertops. The following tips will make the process much easier and more efficient for you and your granite fabricator.

At the time of the final countertops measuring and templating, a decision making adult should be available on site to discuss all options and details.

All items should be removed from existing countertops to make necessary areas easily accessible, breakables such as lamps, vases and other value items should be stored away to prevent damage.
For safety purposes, please keep children and pets away from the construction area.

To avoid substantial costs to customers, it is strongly suggested not to estimate sizes of countertops to be fabricated due to missing appliances or not installed elements. All appliances including stoves, refrigerators, and dishwashers should to be at the job site during measurement. Before any project can be templated and measured, all walls, cabinets, panels, moldings, fillers and apron/farmhouse sinks should be installed. If measurements are incorrect due to these circumstances, a new piece would need to be fabricated.
Make sure the cabinets are plumb and level. Not leveled cabinets can cause the new countertop to crack.

After the layout drawing is complete and the details and options are discussed, you will be asked to sign the Shop Ticket with the final drawing to confirm your choices such as colors, edges and overhangs.

Please verify that you have the correct template for the sink you decide to use, it is usually made of paper or cardboard and usually in the box with the sink. The sink will be mounted to the countertop at the job site. If you are not sure about the template or do not have one, you can ask your granite fabricator to check the template or to make one for you. Sink templates are not necessary for top mount sinks but the sinks need to be on the job site during installation. Keep in mind that sinks are designed for different applications, if you would like an under mount sink, make sure that the sink you choose is designed to be mounted under the granite and the same goes for top mount sinks.

In order to calculate the final cost it is important to know the following at the time of your countertops measuring:
1. The color of stone you are purchasing
2. The kind of sink you are purchasing.
3. The type of edge finish
4. Will you have back splash?
5. Will you need existing counters removed and disposed?
