What is Quartzite?

Quartzite is a hard metamorphic rock that originated as pure quartz sandstone. The sandstone experiences high heat and pressure in the ground turning the grainy sandstone into quartzite, a smooth material with beautiful veins of color and a glassy appearance. The high heat and pressure make an incredibly strong and durable natural stone.

Some minerals often migrate during the metamorphism process creating streaks within the quartzite. The beautiful structure and durability of quartzite make it a top of the line material for countertops, vanity tops, wall surrounds, floors and stair steps.

Pure quartzite is usually white to gray but can often occur in various shades of red, orange, yellow, green, or blue.

Advantages of Choosing Quartzite Countertops
If you’re wondering why quartzite is becoming a popular choice over granite and quartz for countertops, there are several benefits worth considering. Here are some of the essential advantages that come with opting for a quartzite countertop.

Quartzite Outperforms Granite in Hardness
Quartzite has a Mohs Hardness Scale rating of 7, surpassing granite’s score of 6 to 6.5. This indicates that quartzite is unquestionably tougher than granite. As a result, it is frequently utilized in the construction of borders and railway ballasts.

Quartzite Mimics Marble
Quartzite slabs often showcase stunning veining similar to marble, yet they differ significantly in durability. Although they have comparable designs, textures, and colors, quartzite does not etch like marble.

Quartzite Excels in Heat and Scratch Resistance
Due to its formation from sandstone, which undergoes high pressure and temperature deep beneath the Earth’s surface, quartzite inherently possesses exceptional resistance to heat and scratches. In comparison to quartz countertops, quartzite has even greater resistance to heat and scratches.

Quartzite is Low-Maintenance, Like Granite
Like granite, quartzite has low porosity, which makes it naturally antibacterial, anti-mold, and easy to clean. To maintain its low porosity level and keep it looking its best, it is recommended to apply sealant maintenance once a year, much like granite countertops.

How Do I Check If The Material Is Quartzite?
There are various ways to verify if a slab is genuinely quartzite. For instance, you can try scratching the surface with a sharp metal piece or glass. Quartzite is harder than glass, so it shouldn’t leave significant scratches. Marble, on the other hand, will likely have deep scratches.

Quartzite Does Not Etch. Another method is to request a small sample of the slab to take home. Then, place a lemon on top of the surface and let it sit overnight. If the surface remains unchanged in the morning, it’s probably quartzite. If the surface discolors, then it is not quartzite.

Determining the Cost of Quartzite Countertops
The cost of quartzite countertops is primarily influenced by how long it takes to fabricate it, availability and the color. Some quartzite are very hard to cut and it takes more blades, power and a lot time to fabricate the material.

The most affordable price for quartzite countertops is around $60 per square foot installed. On average, suppliers typically charge around $90 per square foot, while some colors like Cristallo may cost over $200 per square foot fabricated in installed.

Quartzite Countertop Color Options
The natural color of quartzite typically ranges from white, gray, black, brown and also blue or green with marble look veins.

The presence of other minerals and exposure to air causes variations in color. For example, the red and pink hues are due to iron oxidation, while orange, yellow, green, and blue tones come from various mineral contents in the quartzite.
