The season of spring is a gardener’s fantasy. Every gardener looks forward to escaping in the garden and getting things well-kept. We also look over the garden with an eye to improving our little space, planting a new bed, or simply updating a plan with some fresh features. Whether you’re working from scratch or already have an established garden, here we have some garden design ideas which can be incorporated in either case.

Start by measuring your garden cautiously, including marking the border of your home, steps, existing trees and shrubs and any pathways. Mark the drip line around trees, as this will be a consideration in developing your garden design themes. Double check your measurements for accuracy. Now, plot your garden on graph paper, or use garden planning software.

Now that you have your garden visible in a virtual aerial view, it’s much easier to visualize the scale and proportions of the area you have to work. Scale is crucial, as in any composition. If you look at a painting, you’ll see that the available space is divided up in sections of varying and pleasing proportions. As you calculate your garden design ideas, keep this principle in mind.

Utilising your plot plan, roughly divide the available space until you have proportions that please your eye. Again, with the ‘aerial’ view, it’s much easier to attain good design proportions.

Next, you’ll want to look at the exposures for the different areas. Let’s say one of your garden design ideas is to put a garden bench in, where you can sit and relax with a book and a tall glass of lemonade during the hot summer afternoons. Obviously, you’ll want to install the bench in an area that’s shady in summer. Placing that bench under a large deciduous tree serves you in summer, as well as on sunny winter days.

Now you’ll want to give some thought to your colour scheme. Gently color in your garden plot with the predominate colors of your existing garden. Blues and purples tend to recede, creating a sense of distance, while brighter colors, such as red, orange and yellow make the space seem closer to the viewer. A street side planting of marigolds or some tall red gladiolas, combined with a summer planting of white and sky blue Morning Glorys vining around the porch posts will make the distance between the street and your porch look longer. Blue and purple flowers, in a shady area, will create a feeling of coolness and welcome respite in summer. As you work out your garden design ideas, remember that color is a powerful agent in garden design.

Next, take a look at those favorite plants. Maybe you’ve got a bed of tulips or daffodils that have naturalized, making a attractive exhibit each spring. You need to determine which plants are the ‘keepers’ and those which might be replaced. You may have some flowers which are very high maintenance, susceptible to molds, mildews and an array of pests. Look through your garden books and catalogs and find another plant or hybrid that’s a little more sturdy and that will be an asset to the garden.

Make certain to include some variety, but then again, don’t go overboard. Some, well-placed trees, pathways, with a mix of heights in your flowers, including both perennials and annuals and perhaps that garden bench can add up to a fine looking garden. Think seasonally. Plant a bed of crocus under a tree this fall, for a bright and cheerful early spring display. Other garden design ideas to throw into the hat include hanging baskets, garden ornaments, a sundial surrounded by kitchen herbs and statuary. Once you get started, brainstorming garden design ideas on paper or on your computer, those ideas will flow quicker than you can put them down. Your final plan will surely be spectacular.

Most often after year or two of spending lots of time in a room you soon get tired of its layout. There’s really nothing wrong with it and there is no real need to redecorate although you feel that it’s lacking something. This is the time when a home room change is probably going to be the most feasible and beneficial to you.

Lugging furniture around and twisting and turning it is not a pleasant task. A good solution to this is to perhaps draw to room on a piece of paper measure the items that are in the room and draw a floor plan to spec. Actually for you computer users there are many great software programs that will allow you to do a home room change plan.

When you have a good idea of what it is you are looking for then it’s time to start.

The best way to start with your home room change is to take everything out of the room that you possibly can. Remove all of your accessories and curtains as well. Now the carpet is going to be the first thing that you were going to want to reposition once you have moved your furniture to one side.

Next its time to start juggling around and making decisions about what is going where. Start with one piece of furniture at a time according to your rough plan that you had drawn up. Take your time arranging each piece, turning into different angles until it’s pleasing to you.

Then take the next piece of furniture that is going to go beside this first piece you started with . Again you want to see how the two pieces are going to work together according to the way that you position them. Once you are happy with this it’s time to move on to the next piece. If you continue going through the room this way you will soon find that you have a layout that is pleasing and that is workable.

The next step is to add your accessories back into the room and at this point you may want to change a few of them to give your room a little bit of a fresher look. Adding new curtains and some new artwork as well will go a long way add a new atmosphere to your home room change.

You should find by now that there is a brand-new feel to the room and you should find it most enjoyable.

It’s always fun to decorate and renovate homes but if we are honest with ourselves, a lot of it has become boring because it’s the same old thing. You paint, lay a new carpet, put in a few new light fixtures and add a few accessories and that’s it.

It doesn’t have to be that way as you can make updating and decorating a room much more enjoyable and intriguing. All you need to do is make a decision that you’re going to go with a theme room. This is very similar to going within the time era such as Renaissance, Victorian or ultra modern but the theme room goes beyond this.

Let’s think about something that you might really, like perhaps you are a cat lover or a dog lover. Then again, maybe you like wizards, fairies, gargoyles, and the mystical. Then you can set the whole mood of your room around one of these favorites of yours.

For example if you are an animal lover then you could pick your favorite animal and build your theme around that particular one and then use some of the other animals that you enjoy as well and tie them in as your accessories.

To begin with, your color scheme is going to want to be such as that which most animals would comply with. For example if your love of animals happens to be in the wildlife and its the polar bears in particular then you are going to want to go with white which will be really easy to accessorize with.

However if your fondest memories lies with the grizzly bears, then you are going to have to stick with the neutral colors and the earthy tones. You can choose your carpet with a variety of colors that are compatible to the theme room that you were going with.

Using animals as an example, a grizzly bear would have several different shades of browns. These colors are the ones that you would want to utilize in your carpet.

Some really nice artwork reflecting the animal would go perfectly as well as some of your accessories. Mind you, don’t go overboard with the whole theme room being inundated with the grizzly bear for example. You can tie this theme in with by adding some of the environmental tones that the grizzly bear lives in and some of the other animals that would be in the same habitat as this particular one.

We have just used the grizzly bear or the wildlife theme as an example to show you how you can start to build your theme room. You can follow the exact same premise with the fantasy line or any other theme that you desire.

When the economy is poor and money is tight there is just not enough money left in the budget to do any home decorating. This doesn’t mean that you have to give up the idea of refreshing a room though; it just means you have to use your imagination and some hidden talents by crafting your décor.

The first thing that may be running through your mind is that you are not a crafty type person. You may end up pleasantly surprising yourself if you try a few of the simple suggestions here. Chances are once you get started there will be no stopping you.

Here are a few simple ways for you to start crafting your décor.

Perhaps those table lamps in the living room are in need of a makeover. There are some really simple ways to do this. For the base if you have a solid surface such as ceramic for example, you can paint some really nice designs on them with glass paint. Use a stencil if you don’t feel you can hand draw the design. There are various types of glass paint on the market that you don’t have to heat set and once they are cured, they are washable.

Then if the base has a pattern to it simply repaint the pattern, again with glass paint and you may want to try using good artists gold paint for the accents. It’s just like coloring within the lines it’s that simple.

Now if the lampshades have seen better days you may want to consider doing a bead shade. It too is really simple. You simply measure a circle around the diameter of the top of the shade then string some beads on some fishing line until it fits perfectly around the top of the shade. Then between each bead carefully tie a piece of line a little longer than the shade itself and string these. Before you know it, you have a really super lamp shade. This is just one of the many ways of crafting your décor.

Let’s talk about window dressings. We all know that with the cost of materials today it really is expensive to put up new curtain or drapes. One of the things you can do here is once again using glass paint you can paint a beautiful design on the outer borders of the window right on the glass. This could be a trellis with a vine crawling up it for example. Again it’s easy to do if you use stencils and glass paint.

There are just a couple of really simple examples to show you that crafting your décor can be fun, easy and inexpensive. Now start putting your imagination to work and come up with your own ideas.

Artistic works that were made from the 1860s to 1970s denote the philosophy and style of modern art. New ways and fresh ideas about art functions and about the nature of materials were being experimented by the artists during this era. Much of the works of modern art were leading to one characteristic of art: abstraction. Later, modern art was also referred to as contemporary art or postmodern art.

Early Works of Modernism

Although modern art was known to have sprouted during the late nineteenth century, there were actually modern art works that were exhibited earlier. When Edouard Manet displayed his paintings at the Salon des Refusés, many believed that it marked the birth of modern art. But even earlier dates showed signs of works of modernism even as early as 1784, which was the year when Jacques-Louie David finished his painting,

The Beginnings of Canvas Art

As early as the fourteenth century, canvas has become the common medium for art works. One of the earliest painting that were seen as a canvas art is the Madonna with Angels, which was seen in Gemaldegalerie, Berlin. Canvas replaced the common support of wooden panels although panel paintings were still being used until the sixteenth and seventeenth century in Italy and Northern Europe. Venetian and Mantegna artists were the ones leading the change from panel paintings to canvas art. Among the best canvas art and the one that is regarded as having the best quality is the venetian sail canvas painting.

Artworks to Enliven the Home

Artworks that convey modern art, whether a canvas or a framed art, are common sights that are used to make the home come alive. Colorful pieces of this artwork enhance the appearance of a room. And with the variety and elegance of the modern art pieces, they are also used to add value to the spaces they are used to adorn. These wonderful pieces pour out inner visions about life themes and have their own inherent appeal. Artworks such as these are being used to enliven a certain boring wall or may be used to attract the attention as you go inside one room.

Interior decorations are often associated with mere interior embellishments. It is difficult to bestow one particular meaning to this art. Renovations can also include rebuilding something within a home as part of interiors. On a practical note, the concept of interior decorations develops from the spirit of individual taste and likings. You can always rely on professional help, provided the person is willing to do her job after a thorough research into your unique taste and lifestyle.

There are so many ways to go about it. Planning in advance will help you with many factors, including your budget and practicality. If you plan on hiring an Interior Decorator, make sure he spends time with you and your family, it is important to make him understand your specific preferences (colors, dislikes, etc). If you plan to do it yourself, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences. After all, you understand your home the best. But, as it quite often happens, you can get lost in the process, so the first step would be planning. Write down the plan, and start with a realistic budget, following are some of the important questions you can ask yourself before you start,

You can make columns with figures once you have estimated the basics,

  •  How much are you willing to spend (read BUDGET)?
  • Do you want to start with a room or include the entire house?
  • Which is the room you would like to start with?
  • What is each room used for? Who is going to use the rooms?
  • What is the theme you have in mind? Anything specific?
  • Would you like to change the wall color/paper?
  • Do you prefer low-maintenance interiors or you can do with a high-maintenance décor?
  • Do you have kids? Pets?  Do you want to inculcate any special care or theme for them?
  • Does your budget include new furniture? (Make a list of it)
  • Do you plan to use stuff at home to create your own lamps, hangings etc.?
  • What needs to be changed? Work on things you really want to change, and make a separate ‘Wish List’ for dream things.
  • Concentrate on the ‘Do’ list first.

Although basic, the answer to the above questions will bring the real picture in front of your eyes. This will help you in practically estimating the cost, and stirring your plan in the right direction. When you are through with the plan, start with a room by measuring its area. And write in front of it the things you will be doing—wall paint/paper; change side tables, add lamp, do panels, change rugs, and so on. After surveying each room (or just a room incase you wish to start with one), and practically jotting down things to be done, now tally this list with your original list(anything from the wish list peeping out?).

Now work on details like the wall color schemes or wall paper, try to use a basic color for all rooms for it will help in keeping the uniformity of your home intact (and costs down), and you can work on different combos with it. For wallpapers, you can use the same background color and work on the print and patterns. A combo of wall paint and paper also looks great with a little thought. You can play with colors on the rugs, curtains and lighting. If modern colors appeal to you, you can work in a combination of colors (complimentary) that go with your furniture and curtains. That should help you with getting started…all the best!

a)     As a general rule, you should try to replace a pillow every six month to two years

b)     The life of a pillow depends on the material it uses. Check with the manufacturer to know about the quality and normal life span of the pillow.

c)     You can test a pillow to see if it is in shape,

-          Place the pillow on a flat surface by folding it in half. Put a shoe on the top. If the shoe bounces away and the pillow regains its original shape, your pillow is in good shape. If the shoe stays, it probably has lived its life and it’s time to change.

Before you buy, do not forget to,

·         Inquire about the material used for the filling. If it is a down pillow, you can be assured of its softness and warmth.

·         Buckwheat hulls is another natural filling that is considered resistant to breakage and weathering.

·         Memory foam pillows also known as contour pillows are great too. Made by mixing different chemicals, they are resilient and provide complete support to the neck and head for a restful sleep.

·          Hypoallergenic pillows are made with materials that minimize the possibility of allergic reactions.

·         Body pillows are long ones designed to reach your feet from head.

There are three main things to consider when choosing interior paint for your walls; sheen, color and type of paint. The two main types of paint are latex and alkyd. Latex paints (sometimes known as water-based paints) use water as a thinner and therefore dry quickly and don’t smell. Latex paint is easy to use and cleans up with soap and water. Alkyd paints (also known as oil-based paints) use solvent as a thinner. They are superior for wood walls and trim and although more durable than latex paints, they are also less healthy and are harder to clean.

Sheen is how glossy the paint is; how much light is reflected off the finished walls. There are 3 types of sheen; flat, satin and gloss. Flat paint is non-reflective and hides any scratches, nail holes or stains. Flat paints are the superior choice for ceilings and rooms not subject to water or small children. A satin finish provides a soft shine as well as a durable, hard surface great for rooms that get a lot of use. Gloss paint has the most shine and is easiest to clean.

Picking the right color for a room depends on the type of lighting and what sort of theme you’d like the room to have. For rooms with a lot of lighting, go with a white, beige, cream or off white paint to pair with the bright light coming in. For rooms a bit darker, you want a bright color for the walls; yellows or pinks to brighten the room up, for bedrooms use cool purples, blues and greens.Lavender is a great color for a girl's room, with light coming in, the room is quite bright, but when it’s time for bed, the room color is still calm enough to support sleep. Daring colors like reds, hot pinks or lime greens are not advised under most circumstances.

At the point that you’ve considered the three main elements of paint; sheen, color and type of paint, you’re ready to get started. Go to your local paint store, choose your paint color and then get at it!

There is a silent argument that fills every household in the nation. It’s a question that arises for every fussy cleaner and obsessive hygiene fan. It doesn’t often come up in conversation because you either agree or you don’t, case closed. The question: glass, yes or no?  Americans typically favor the latest and greatest.  Things should look great, but also have a useful purpose.  Great visual effect and pizzazz are essential. So, when homeowners and interior decorators contemplate design, glass inevitably enters their thoughts.  Perhaps a bedroom has a glass display case.  Perhaps your living room contains a noguchi table.  Is any piece of furniture worth keeping for the sake of beauty?

When you set your eyes upon glass, you cannot refuse to acknowledge its attractiveness. The transparent properties of glass add to its beauty; producing rainbows in the sun and accentuating candlelight at night.  Behold the beauty of glass. Its no wonder people enjoy having glass objects in their home. Modern furniture is highly diverse, so it is common to find glass even among classic mahogany and oak shelving units. If a person is merely choosing furniture for looks, glass could be a must-have in the household.

However, what about the downsides to keeping glass furniture in the house? Like any object, there are as many pros as there are cons. Glass can be, plainly put, a bit of a hassle. It is unforgiving in terms of fingerprints and smudges, and water pools on it easily. Caring for glass furniture can be time intensive. No one wants to march through the house every day, wiping down every shiny glass surface and nelson bench with paper towels like a soldier on duty. The task merely proves to daunting for some homeowners.

And let’s not forget the matters of safety that glass threatens in the household. New parents know that glass can be challenging in the presence of young children.  When they aren’t leaving their adorable handprints on the glass, you’re worried about the harm shattering glass may cause. Knocking over a wooden bench is one thing. A shattered glass coffee table is another thing entirely. It’s an accident that makes every parent shudder and hope never happens.

However, if the prospect of cleaning and caring for glass is not daunting, glass is a viable option for you. As many benefits as there are to having glass furniture, there are some drawbacks as well. Perhaps it isn’t the best choice for those who dislike to clean often, or those with young children. However, for others, it can be a stunning addition to any communal room.
